Happy Mother's Day from Junior Infants

Junior infants have been working super hard at their reading. They know all our sounds and have been very busy practicing putting them together. They love reading!

Learning about Weight can be great fun! 

First and Second class learned about weight this week, they learned the units of measurement grams and kilograms. They investigated how objects can be balanced on a balance. They used non standard unit of measurements to balance varying objects around the class room. The children discovered that it takes 84 lollipop sticks to balance an apple. Everyone had great fun using the balances and learning about weight.

Spring has sprung in the Infant classroom. 

Junior infants are having lots of fun learning all about the farm. This week we created a Farm in the small world area, made farm animals out of play dough, listened to farm stories and played some animal sorting games. We also made beautiful Spring daffodils. We really appreciated the children from 6th, 4th and 3rd class who came to help us. ​

Today the children in 3rd and 4th class met with Tadgh from the Glucksman Art Gallery in UCC. Scoil Teampall Toinne and two other schools in Munster have been chosen to take part in the project. They will explore the art of artist 'Billy Foley' and create their own pieces of work based on a painting of his. Billy Foley will make a special visit to our school in early March to work with the children. We, along with the other schools will travel to the Glucksman Gallery in March to see their pieces of work displayed in the gallery. Keep on an eye on this page to see some of their creations. 

Arctic Aistear

Junior Infants have been busy learning all about the Arctic Circle. This week they created their own version of The Northern Lights using chalk pastels, constructed a a winter den for the Polar Bear, designed and cut out Arctic animal masks and had lots of fun with the Snowy Small World :)

Fourth Class Leading the way

​Fantastic Fourth were a great help to Ms. Keating on Friday.  They planned, set up and organised activity stations for the children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class.  Take a look at the range of throwing, catching, travelling, ball games and skipping activities they taught the younger ones! Well done Fourth.

Halloween Fun in First and Second

First and Second class had great fun for Halloween dressing up and playing games in their classroom. The children sampled Bairin Breac and they got apples as a treat. They also played traditional Halloween games with their classmates. 

Junior Infants Love Aistear

Autumn has been a busy season in Junior Infants.

We really enjoyed the story of 'The Rainbow Fish' by Marcus Pfister. We had lots of fun in Aistear; we built a home under the sea, played with water, made some sea creatures using play dough and created our very own sparkly fish. Check out our pictures below.

5th & 6th Class Windmills

These photos show what we learned in Science class. We learned about windmills.
Windmills are becoming more popular in Ireland.
They use wind to create Electricity.
We made our own windmills out of paper and a pencil.
It was great fun.

5th and 6th loved learning about the Titanic

We were learning about the Titanic. We built boats out of tin foil, lollipop sticks and sellotape to see would they float. We put the boats in a basin of water. We put biscuits on them to see how much weight the boat could carry. When  we put too many biscuits on the boat it sank. Some managed to stay up but others sank. 
We had great fun.

Terrific Tastes

Terrific Third and Fantastic Fourth.

From using calculators to add 4 digit numbers to reinacting our favourite TV programmes, we really have been busy. 
The boys and girls spent time chatting to one another as Gaeilge and practising some of their ceisteanna nua like Cé mhéad duine atá i do theaghlach? and Cé thusa? and freagraí nua like Tá triúr i mo theaghlach and  Is mise... We even took some videos of us trying out our new learning. Take a look!
In Religion we learned about a man named Abraham.  Some children thought he was the previous President of America (Abraham Lincoln) but this Abraham was the first Jew and God asked him to move to a new land and change his name from Abram to Abraham.  God gave Abraham and his wife Sarah a son named Isaac.  No not the same Isaac in 3rd class!! 
On Tuesday we went to the church to listen to Nancy and Joan share stories of Jesus healing the sick.  We shared prayers for those who are sick and we said a decade of the Rosary for the Annunciation of our Lady.
In Geography we looked at islands around Ireland.  We located many well known islands on the map and discussed how islands are formed from volcanoes.  The children shared stories of their holidays to Cape Clear and the Aran Islands.
