Third and fourth class were busy investigating this week. We looked at how magnets repel(push away) and attract (pull towards each other). We tested various materials to see which were magnetic.
We learned about wildlife on the seashore by joining in on a live Zoom video hosted by South East Science Festival.
We created dancing figures by drawing a stick figure on a plate using a whiteboard marker and simply adding water to make him/her dance.
We observed a chemical reaction between an acid and a base, we used an egg and some vinegar to carry out this experiment. There was great excitement watching the egg shell dissolve, and turn into a rubber like material. We then brought the egg outside to see if it would bounce.
First class
1st class explored their senses. The children took part in different investigations exploring their five senses- touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell. They finished their Science investigations by making their own fruit kebabs. Yum, Yum!
Second Class
Children in second class were quite busy this week. They learned about how water moves through plants and trees. They learned the word transpiration. They carried out an experiment using lillies, whereby they placed food colouring in their water of two lillies and they watched what happened to the flowers over the course of a few days. They also carried out an experiment which examined the strength of the Hydrogen bonds in H2O. The children placed a paper clip onto the top of the dome of water. They were amazed by how strong the hydrogen bond was. It supported the weight of the paper clip. Finally, the children carried out an experiment examine a soil sample. They investigated the soil sample by feeling the soil, sifting through the soil and separating out larger particles. The children discussed the characteristics of rock samples also.
